5 Quick Speaker Position Tips That Will Improve Sound Quality

Are You Getting the Most Out of Your 2-Channel Audio System?

5 Quick Speaker Position Tips That Will Improve Sound Quality

When it comes to enjoying studio-quality music at home, the speakers you buy matter. But even the best speakers need a little help with delivering an immersive musical experience in your unique home environment. Proper speaker positioning can help you get the most out of your 2-channel audio system.

If you have a cherished stereo system in your Manhattan Beach, CA home, use the following five quick tips provided by our audio experts to ensure your speakers are located where they’ll sound their best.

1. Form a Triangle

Your speakers should be equally placed in front and on either side of the listening area, forming a triangle. Make sure they’re far enough apart to avoid muddy stereo imaging but close enough that you don’t experience a noticeable gap in your music. While there isn’t a hard and fast rule for how far apart speaker should be from each other, you can find some handy calculators online that can assist.

2. Angle Your Speakers

While it’s common to see stereo speakers facing directly forward (like in the photo above), they should be angled inward so that they’re pointed at the listener. The best way to find the ideal angle for your speakers is to test different positions. If you have a larger listening room, you might decrease the angle of your speakers so that the music fills more space. Likewise, a smaller listening room might require a steeper angle.

3. Keep Speakers Away from Walls

We typically see stereo speakers pushed up against the wall or stuck in room corners. However, they should ideally be positioned at least two feet away from walls. Putting space between your speakers and the walls minimizes sound reflections and creates a more dynamic sound stage.

4. Align Tweeters with Ear Level

Position your speakers (or your seating) so that the tweeters are at ear level—or as close to ear level as you can get them. Your speakers’ tweeters produce the high-frequency sounds in your music, bringing the vocals and higher-pitched instruments to life. If you have bookshelf speakers, we recommend putting them on speaker stands to lift the tweeters close to ear level (as seen in the photo above).

5. Consider Room Acoustics

While this tip doesn’t involve speaker positioning, it’s still an important step in creating the ideal listening experience. Room acoustics significantly affect how you hear sound. If your listening room has too many hard surfaces, you may experience an influx of sound reflections that cause piercing echoes. On the other hand, not enough hard surfaces can make your music sound flat. Balance is key.
